Global leader in innovative solutions

As the world moves towards improving sustainability practices and achieving net zero, the mining and resources sector will face a challenging time ahead – and the expertise of Queensland’s innovative mining equipment, technology and services (METS) companies will be a driving factor in its success.

Support from our world-class METS sector is why Queensland remains a mining, energy and resources investment destination of choice.

Our METS businesses have a reputation for providing practical solutions for industry-leading clients across the world – delivering process optimisation, improving efficiencies and operating outcomes, combined with better data management and labour integration, while also boosting ESG, health, safety and wellness.

Industry Snapshot

Queensland METS companies service all stages of the mining lifecycle, generating over $5B in export revenue annually.

At their core is a commitment to customer-driven problem solving that fosters innovation and industry collaborations.

In 2020-21, the sector delivered $3.07 billion in value add for Queensland’s economy.

The agility and quality leadership means Queensland METS companies are ideally positioned to make the most of new opportunities.

Vibrant ecosystem geared for growth

Experienced at supporting globally dispersed clients, Queensland’s METS sector continues to grow thanks to three key local advantages:

  •  a highly-skilled talent pool,
  •  a supportive government and
  •  a collaborative mindset.

Over 29,600 people are employed by METS companies across Queensland, with well-established tertiary study paths into the sector and skilled migration pathways ensuring a steady supply of highly-skilled talent.

As of 2020, two-thirds of Australian METS companies were involved in collaborative projects with other organisations, both industry-based and research-focused, to commercialise proven technological advances rapidly to market to address emerging industry challenges.

In Brisbane, the University of Queensland’s Sustainable Minerals Institute includes two specialist research centres – Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre and the WH Bryan Mining and Geology Research Centre – that offer METS companies access to cutting edge research facilities, knowledge and technology. JKTech, also Brisbane-based, utilises these facilities to offer a suite of services including consultancy, laboratory work, specialist software and equipment, and professional development services designed to assist mining companies to positive and sustainable outcomes.

In Queensland, dedicated initiatives like the METS accelerator pathway further promote collaboration by assisting start-ups and scale-ups to bring their novel products and services to the world.

Wide scale industry growth is guided by the Queensland Government’s 10-Year Roadmap and Action Plan, backed by $8 million worth of initiatives, and directly supported through grants and other funding.
