Ryan Freer was appointed commissioner for Korea in July 2021. Prior to joining Trade and Investment Queensland, he was the New Zealand Trade Commissioner for Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos, based in Bangkok.
Ryan has extensive professional experience in Asia, including more than 10 years’ experience in Korea across both the public and private sectors. He was New Zealand’s Trade Commissioner in Korea from 2012 to 2017, overseeing a significant rise in export values to Korea and supporting the signing and implementation of the Korea–New Zealand Free Trade Agreement.
Ryan’s experience covers a wide range of industries, including agribusiness, high-value food and beverage, steel, coal, natural gas and automotive components, across markets including Korea, India, Thailand and Australia. His past Queensland experience includes a role with an international consulting firm in Brisbane, delivering energy-market studies for major coal producers, logistic companies and traders.
Ryan has a Bachelor of Communications from Griffith University and a Master of International Studies and Korean language qualifications from Seoul National University. He is also a graduate of the New Zealand Institute of Directors.
