Security of information

The Queensland Government collects and manages personal information in accordance with the Information Privacy Act 2009.

Trade and Investment Queensland is committed to protecting your privacy by complying with the 11 information privacy principles contained in the Act.

Trade and Investment Queensland will comply with the principles in relation to the collection, storage, use and disclosure of personal information that you may supply to us. We will only collect information if it is necessary for us to provide a service to you or to maintain our ongoing relationship. Any information we collect will not be used or disclosed other than for:

  • the purpose for which it was collected
  • the purpose that you would reasonably expect
  • the purpose required or permitted by law
  • the purpose authorised by you.

Information collected on Trade and Investment Queensland websites

When you visit a Trade and Investment Queensland website, our web measurement tools and server logs may record information for statistical purposes only, including: 

  • browser type, device type (computer platform) and screen resolution  
  • internet service provider (ISP) 
  • your traffic patterns such as date and time of visits 
  • IP address 
  • pages accessed and documents downloaded 
  • referring website

Our web-measurement software may use cookies when collecting this information. 

We do not attempt to identify personal details of individuals from this data unless required as part of an investigation, including where authorised by a law enforcement agency.

How we treat emails

As a Queensland Government statutory body, email correspondence may be treated as a public record and retained in accordance with the Public Records Act 2023 (QLD)

Our systems may monitor email communication for security and compliance purposes. Your contact details will not be added to a mailing list without your consent, written authorisation or by online subscription. 

Trade and Investment Queensland uses email filtering systems to block inappropriate or malicious content.


Collection and use of personal information 

Trade and Investment Queensland collects personal information to perform its functions under the Trade and Investment Queensland Act 2013, including facilitating trade and investment opportunities. 

Collection may include: 

  • your name and contact details  
  • information about your enterprise or organisation 
  • your areas of interest  
  • records of services provided or events attended. 

Personal information may be processed in accordance with applicable laws, including the Information Privacy Act 2009 (QLD) and, where relevant, the European Union General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)

European Union General Data Protection Regulation legislation

Where the GDPR applies (for example, where we engage with individuals located in the European Union), individuals have certain rights in relation to their personal information. 

These include the right to: 

  • access personal data
  • correct inaccurate information
  • request erasure (in certain circumstances)
  • restrict processing
  • receive data in a portable format
  • withdraw consent where processing is based on consent. 

You may opt out of receiving communication from Trade and Investment Queensland at any time by using the unsubscribe link in our emails.


Storage and security 

Personal information may be stored in the Trade and Investment Queensland secure customer relationship management (CRM) system.  

We take reasonable steps to protect personal information through appropriate technical and organisational safeguards.


Data retention 

Records containing personal information are stored and managed in accordance with the Public Records Act 2023 (QLD) and approved retention and disposal schedules issued by the Queensland State Archivist. 

You have the rights under the GDPR to request access, rectification or erasure, or restriction on processing of personal information as well as a right to data portability. You retain the right to withdraw consent to processing of personal information at any time. In the event you are dissatisfied with Trade and Investment Queensland ’s management of your personal information, you have a right to lodge a complaint with a GDPR supervisory authority. 

Complaints

If you believe your personal information has not been handled in accordance with applicable privacy laws, you may choose to lodge a complaint. 

Please submit your complaint via the Queensland Government Complaints and Compliments portal. Your complaint should: 

  • be made in writing/via the portal as soon as possible after the incident or breach 
  • outline the circumstances of the issue  
  • include all relevant details.

Once received, your complaint will be registered and managed in accordance with the Queensland Government Complaints and Compliments process. 

If you are not satisfied with the response/outcome of your complaint, you may request a review which will be sent to an independent officer within Trade and Investment Queensland to conduct. 

Trade and Investment Queensland will cooperate fully where the nature of the complaint requires escalation for investigation by external authorities.
