Brisbane robotics company Lyro’s mission is to revolutionise the packing of fruit and vegetables with their intelligent pick and place robots.
Setting new standards for efficiency and precision, Lyro’s robots are equipped with a cutting-edge pattern packing system.
This allows them to excel at handling the unique challenges of natural products.Lyro’s success in Australia is now translating into positive developments on the world stage, with exporting to the US and Asia on the horizon
From fruits and vegetables of all sizes to the diverse range of everyday goods, Lyro’s system adapts to ensure optimal packing patterns for every item.
Lyro specialises in box optimisation for transport, ensuring high-variation products are packed securely and efficiently, minimizing waste and maximizing value throughout the supply chain. Lyro CEO Dr Nicole Robinson explains: “What we've developed is the world's first general purpose packing robotic system for the food supply chain sector.
“So we're able to hack a wide variety of crops where before a lot of these systems were tailored to a specific crop type or a specific food type, where our systems are able to very quickly train and learn how to pick up new items of different shapes and sizes and pack them in the desired way.”
Ambitions around exporting from Queensland into international markets would not have been possible without the export advisory services of Trade and Investment Queensland (TIQ), says Dr Robinson.
“It's fantastic to know there's a resource such as TIQ there so we can talk to someone, help us through our goals, and think about our expansion plans to make sure that we can get to where we want to go,” she said.
When exporting to global markets was made easier
Lyro’s Co-Founder Nathan Kelly-Boxall says TIQ, the state’s global business agency, assisted Lyro to construct export strategies. This has helped to introduce the company to local producers with export in mind.
“When we could see that our robots were reliably packing these boxes at the speeds that the customer required, it was sort of an amazing light bulb moment,” he said.
“We used to say, we have something here.
“We are able to actually help these farmers in a real way that delivers great economic impact for them, but also predictability and reliability so that their businesses can continue to grow.
It gives them access to more export markets,” he added.
'As founders, we want our products to go global, that's why we created our startups in the first place.'

Start exporting from Queensland with our support
Nicole encouraged any business considering starting export business to contact TIQ.
“If you've had inbound interest internationally and you're just not quite sure how to get started with that opportunity, TIQ is a really important resource to be able to give you more information and support.
“As founders, we want our products to go global, that's why we created our startups in the first place.
“But being able to tap on a resource that's free and accessible in helping make sure that we meet all the requirements and regulations to go overseas, that's phenomenal,” she added.
