More of China’s cancer patients can now receive world-class treatment, after Queensland’s Icon Group became the first Australian healthcare company to deliver cancer care in China.

Over 16 months, Icon has opened 4 cancer centres in Jiangxian, Chongqing, Qingdao and Fengcheng, with another set to open in coming months in Sanmenxia.

The centres offer the latest in radiation therapy technology and techniques, delivering world-class care in regions where many cancer patients have previously had to travel long distances and attend doctor consults at makeshift street clinics due to the lack of healthcare facilities.

CEO Mark Middleton said Icon Group is committed to bringing the most up-to-date care to more cancer patients around the world.

‘In 2019, we became the first Australian healthcare company to bring cancer care into China, turning the tide of radiation oncology for the Jiangxian community in China’s Shanxi province,’ he said.

‘Since then, we’ve continued to utilise our longstanding oncology expertise and innovation to elevate the standard of care for millions across China.

‘Alongside exporting Icon’s Australian expertise and working closely with our colleagues in China, Trade and Investment Queensland’s China team were able to further connect us with local governments and potential partners, which helped nurture ongoing relationships in the region.’

Icon’s experienced clinical teams in China are supported by the Group’s innovative remote functions based in Brisbane, Queensland.

These include the delivery of complex radiation therapy planning and cutting-edge clinical training utilising augmented reality headsets.
