Queensland education institution making mark on global stage

A lot has changed since 1882, but TAFE Queensland’s vision to be the market leader in high-quality education in Queensland and beyond has stayed the same for more than 140 years. The international education and training sector is a huge contributor to Queensland’s economy and the state’s second largest services export.

About 100,000 students from around the world come to Queensland to pursue their education, bringing significant social, cultural and financial benefits to the state.

As the largest and most experienced provider in the state, TAFE Queensland delivers training to more than 125,000 students across more than 60 locations each year.

This cohort includes more than 6200 international students from more than 90 countries around the world.

The TAFE Queensland’s International Education team is dedicated to developing business with governments and enterprises across the globe and leads the international student experience from start to finish.

Its student engagement and support team organises events, maintains engagement and supports welfare and ensures an easy transition to living, earning and learning in Australia.

Working with about 240 international education agents, TAFE Queensland’s diversification strategy is ensuring its sustainability and growth. Its top source markets of Colombia, Thailand and Philippines are very different to the traditional markets nationally of China and India.

TAFE Queensland has been taking an innovative approach to spreading its brand across the world, including using social influencers in key markets to significantly increase inquiries and enrolments.

Along with training international students in Australia, TAFE Queensland has established partnerships offshore and delivered training to more than 800 students in China, Fiji, Nauru, PNG, Timor Leste, Panama and Iran in 2022-23, as well as exploring options to develop hospitality programs in Saudi Arabia.

Russell Mckay

TAFE Queensland won the International Education and Training category at the 2023 Premier of Queensland’s Export Awards. It was the second time in as many years it had been nominated for the prize.

TAFE Queensland International Education General Manager Russell Mckay said the award reinforced the institution’s reputation as an innovative and progressive education provider in Australia and around the world.

“For us, it's about really showcasing the Queensland vocational education and training sector overseas and demonstrating the expertise that Queensland has to offer on the global stage,” Russell said.

Trade and Investment Queensland, through Study Queensland, has assisted TAFE Queensland in developing global partnerships, including agreeing Memorandums of Understanding with education institutions in Indonesia, China and Saudi Arabia.

“I would say that we count Trade and Investment Queensland as our colleagues,” Russell said.

“We work together collaboratively. We engage in opportunities offshore and then share information and knowledge about how we can galvanise those opportunities, and they back us every step of the way.”
